Sakaguchi: The Last Story is not a Final Fantasy rehash

It’s a case of handbags at dawn as two Japanese RPG developers got involved in a little verbal jousting over Mistwalker’s upcoming Wii game,The Last Story.Mistwalker boss andFinal Fantasycreator Hironobu Sakaguchi was mocked byFinal Fantasy Gaidendirector Takashi Tokidafor “rehashing” the very series he built. While most likely in jest, Sakaguchi still took the opportunity to justify his game. The debate started when Tokida asked Sakaguchi, “How about stopping with theFinal Fantasyrehashes?...

SDCC: Have a cute trailer for Rayman Origins

2D platformers fell out of favor with publishers a long time ago, which is why titles likeRayman Originsmake me happy. Here’s a shamelessly old school platformer, and it’s looking damn sexy. This new trailer shows off some of the accolades won at E3, and invents a few of its own. I’d say it deserves them from what we’ve seen thus far.

Sony to report Q1 profit for PlayStation division

After a disappointing showing in their annual report for 2009, Sony’s PlayStation division is moving back to black with their financials. Nikkei is reporting that the consumer electronics giant will announce a return to profitability when they release second quarter figures on Thursday. This is also in stark contrast to Sony’s first quarter performance last year, where the division saw a loss of 25.7 billion yen. Cutting costs seemed to have been the cure....

Square Enix’s Bravely Default for 3DS looks lovely

Outside of theSkyward Swordtrailer shown at Nintendo’s pre-Tokyo Game Show 3DS conference last night, I think there was only one other video (of which there weremany) that caught my eye. It was the new Square Enix gameBravely Default: Flying Fairy. Specifically, the art style. “Wow,” is pretty much all I can say. That’s one way to design around hardware limitations. It’s not so apparent in the screenshots as it is in the trailer,so give that a watch....

Stride Gum aims to take down Uwe Boll

I’ve got no beef with Uwe Boll. The industry is full of really sh*tty movies, and Boll is just another guy out there trying to make a buck. I think he’s become an easy guy to blame. In the end, movies, like games, are for fun, and I think that we sometimes forget that and become too critical of these forms of entertainment. But, for some reason, Stride Gum does have a beef with Uwe Boll....

Swarm will warm its way into your heart

“What are those little blue things?!” shrieked the tiny elderly woman guarding the front desk at the Larkspur Hotel in downtown San Francisco. I found myself sitting at the hotel bar last week with Joel DeYoung, the Director of Game Technology for Hothead Games. He explained to me how the idea forSwarm, Hothead’s newest brainchild, evolved from nothing more than PhD research into a full blown commercialized game. That might explain why it’s been in production for nearly five years....

Take a good hard look at BioShock 2’s system specs, DRM

After yesterday’s newsabout the incentivesforpre-purchasingBioShock 2on Steam, it’s probably wise for us to look over the system requirements and the DRM specifics, which are probably more important than anything else to a good number of you. For the minimum and recommended specs, you can either hit up the game’s Steam page again, or simply click through past the break. It’s standard stuff, really. Anyone with a gaming PC that’s a few years old or newer should be just fine....
