Metacritic’s best and worst games of 2008

Metacriticmight have made headlines this year for the ridiculousfanboy turf warsthat have gone on with user reviews, but I find the site to be a generally useful resource when charting how well a game is doing with the press. At least, it’s good to see how much the press likes to overrate things based on hype more than a game’s merit. Using Metacritic, we can essentially find out what the entire gaming media’s top ten picks for best and worst games of the year were....

Metroid Prime 3 delayed a week

In a daring display of “spoonful of sugar” delay-droppin’, Nintendo has up and hidden some less-than-wonderful news at the end of theirPhantom Hourglassrelease:Metroid Prime 3‘s release date has slipped a week to August 27th. Delays are nothing new, particularly in Nintendo’s world, and a week isn’t quite as bad as it could have been. But I’m feeling terrifically lazy today — the sun’s shining bright up here in Bellingham — so I’m gonna leave this to my Nintendo Delay Response Generator....

Modern Warfare Wii compared to Modern Warfare PS3/360

Really,Game Informer?Really? Is this what we’re doing, now? We’re comparing Wii games to PS3 and Xbox 360 ones? Apparently we are! Yes,Game Informerhas seriouslyrun comparison shotsbetweenModern Warfare: Reflexon the Wii andCall of Duty 4:Modern Warfareon the Xbox 360 and PS3 to prove … nothing. Aside from being two totally different games on systems that have no justifiable comparison, I really don’t know whatanybodywould get out of contrasting a Wii game and a HD console game....

Dropping real coinage on fantasy swords may be just as easy as purchasing aRock Band 2DLC song in the future — that is, if Peter Molyneux’s plans come to fruition. Earlier this evening during his BAFTA lecture, the Lionhead Studios head honcho announced plans to incorporate an in-game store inFable III. He ideated that it would be used for purchasing simple items like weapons, DLC on the scale ofFable II’sKnothole Island expansion, and even FAQs....

Monday Night Combat merch now available online

At this year’s PAX, I must have walked by the Uber Entertainment booth a good thirty times. Scarily enough, every single time, there was someone buying one of theMonday Night Combatstatues. They’re cool, sure, but I had no clue people were that into the them, especially considering how newMNCwas at the time. For everyone who missed out on buying the figures — and other assorted merchandise, like hats and shirts — Uber has got your back....

Monolith making a new FPS, needs engineer to engineer things

Monolith Productions needs new blood for a new game. According to a freshjob postingon theF.E.A.R. 2: Project Originstudios’ Web site (spotted byIGN), Monolith needs a software engineer capable of working on a “triple-A next-generation console title.” But that’s not all: the engineer must also be able to share with others and create a property destined to land on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. We haven’t the slightest idea what this “cutting-edge” FPS could be....

Monthly Musings: Other Worlds Than These

Every month, members of the Destructoid community are given the opportunity to have their writings posted on the front page thanks to our Monthly Musings theme. Good job with last month’s theme, etcetera, etcetera. Your ability to pull worthwhile articles out of crappy guidance is as impressive as it is typical at this point. This month, the topic is “Other Worlds Than These” — extra points if you catch the reference — focusing on those games that attempt to create believable, immersive, interesting worlds....

Monthly Musings: write something about sex

Every month, the Destructoid Monthly Musing topic gives community members the ability to have their work posted on the Dtoid front page. I tried to name this month’s theme something clever, but my attempts ranged from the unfocused (“Plugs and ports”) to the downright awful (“Condoms and controllers”). These things happens. This month’s musing theme is about videogame sex. Sex within videogames, sexual desires revolving around videogames, and sex in aspects of videogame culture where one wouldn’t typically expect it....

Motion Control: The good, the bad, & the ugly

[Today’s promoted blog on Motion Control is from SephirothX! Make sure you write a blog onthis week’s topic, eSports, if you want a chance to see your own blog on the front page next week. — JRo] Motion control it seems is a dicey topic for gamers because, due to the wide range of opinions regarding it. Conversations will either boil down to people complaining about “gimmicks” infesting gaming and that the traditional way of gaming is the true way or people defending it proclaiming that it’s the dawn of a new age in gaming and Wii’s lifetime sales justify its place....

Name a unit in Command & Conquer 4

You’ve always wanted to go down in videogame history, but you’ve got no game design skills, you’re not good enough at games to be a professional gamer and blogging on the weekends at Destructoid is already a filled position. It’s a common problem, but one that can be solved thanks toCommand & Conquer 4and its “Name That Unit” contest in which anyone can name a unit and have the chance of having that name be selected and used in the actual game....

New Max Payne screens will put hair on your … head

The introduction of a newer, more grizzled, baldy cueball chromedome Max inMax Payne 3has been subject to some controversy among those who aren’t keen on playing a whitetrash version of the depressing noir hero. These new screens, however, provide something a little more familiar. It seems that we will, at least for a portion of the game, get to play as Max in his traditional clothing with a more hair-flavored hairstyle....
