A PS3 vs. your girlfriend: it’s like Sophie’s Choice, only more dramatic

Forget thescary crying babyandexploding Rubik’s cube, this should have been the PS3’s marketing campaign from the start. Maybe things would have turned outbetter.Comparing girlfriends with technology is always fun (and surprisingly effective). Just the other day I bought an iPod because I realized that, it’s true, girlfriendscan’tplay the soundtrack toDreamgirlsfor me while I’m working out. See? Sony would only benefit from such smart thinking. What are some other things that the PS3 does that your girlfriend can’t?...

A trip to the racetracks: Days of Thunder: Arcade

When we hit the turn, at 120 miles per hour, I couldn’t hold it in anymore. Rey was in the front of the race car, his camera hanging out of the window. Michelle, our PR representative, was sitting next to us, and we were both squirming due to the mild g-forces. With that last turn, I finally just…well, squealed. We were in a Toyota Camry Hybrid. Yeah, I know. But let’s be real, not many of us get to go around a race track, and I was lucky enough to have a couple of laps around the Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, California....

Beenox’sSpider-Man: Shattered Dimensionswas pretty good, so it’s not the worst news to hear that Activision has tasked them with being the primary developer of upcoming Spider-Man games. “Beenox’s creative vision reinvigorated the Spider-Man gaming experience among critics and fans inSpider-Man: Shattered Dimensions,” Patrick Kelly, Senior Vice President of Activision Studios says. “We can’t wait to see where this talented studio will take this franchise in the future.” “Being able to map out Spider-Man’s interactive future gives us the creative freedom to really craft the best gaming experience for the fans,” remarks Beenox studio head, Dee Brown....

American McGee’s Grimm debut trailer makes its…uh…debut.

Back in 2000 I and everyone I knew was unbelievably excited forAmerican McGee’s Alice. Following the game’s release we could all be found hovering over our keyboards, gleefully WASDing our way through McGee’s twisted vision of Wonderland. Sure,Alicemay not stand the test of time, but many of us have fond memories of that damned anorexic cheshire cat and for us the game remains iconic of that time. So when word that a game based on the tales of the Brothers Grimm was being developed by American McGee’s design house Spicy Horse I was, needless to say, more than a little excited....

An item-making RPG with Atelier Rorona

TheAtelierfranchise isn’t exactly well known in the States. Sure, with eleven titles out in Japan, six of which made it to our shores, you’d think the franchise would be super popular. And it is! At least in Japan…but over here it’s made only a niche presence on the market. C’est la vie, right? Well that’s not stopping NIS from localizing the latest in the franchise,Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland. Coming to the PS3, this RPG based upon the foundation of doing alchemy is almost ready to launch this fall....

However, Microsoft has released a list of games that are scheduled to hit XBLA in the “coming weeks....

Army of Two gameplay footage emerges

Army of Two is one of the only EA games that I’ve actually ever anticipated for any length of time, but it has to be said that thus far, evidence of gameplay has been thin on the ground, while we’ve been fed pretty pictures and premises in its place. With this video, however, a lot more’s been made available for us to sink our teeth into and to be honest with you … it doesn’t quite sweep me off my feet....

Atlus PR dude sounds like Scooby Doo

Sony’s social media manager and inventor of the baked bean Jeff Rubenstein caught up with Atlus’ main PR guy Aram Jabbari to chat aboutDemon’s Souls. The cheeky pair discuss the game’s difficulty, the implementation of online play, and the changes made to the game in the transition from Japan to America. However, none of those things are as interesting as the one important detail I noticed with this video. At the 15 second mark, when Jabbari is invited to speak, you’ll notice that he starts his speech with a stealthy impersonation of Scooby Doo....

Battlefield 3 beta arrives September 29

It feels almost a bit late in the day for a game that’s so close, but nevertheless you have your chance to enter the beta forBattlefield 3on September 29. I’m assuming that “beta” in this instance means “glorified demo,” as it so often is. If you preordered the game on Origin, you get early access on September 27. The demo takes place on the Operation Metro map and uses the “Rush” mode gametype — where one team attacks and the other defends....

Bead-based consoles, no batteries required

I’ve been fortunate enough to find a group of bead sprite fanatics like me in a little place calledThe Bead-Sprites Forum, and this group has one member whose pieces are making him stand out from the regular crowd Doctor Octorochas made some cute mini 3D versions of our favorite Nintendo consoles, as well as a few life size models as well, all using fused beads to craft them. Anyone who has tried to work with fused beads knows that making 3D pieces is hard because either the beads won’t fit together in the end, or the darn pieces just break during construction....

Blur 360 beta open to all next week

The closed beta forBluron Xbox 360 is so popular that Bizarre Creations ran completely out of invite codes. That’s what lead designer Gareth Wilson told Kotaku Talk Radio this week. Since they can’t get anybody else into the beta as it stands right now, they’re opening it up to the public. Everyone with a Live Gold account should be able to download the beta next week. And you should download it, by the by....

Bookworm Adventures is B-A-D-A-S-S

After reading aPenny ArcadethatmentionedBookworm Adventures,I became curious. While my vocabulary is not as extensive as Tycho’s (and I’m not as irritatingly ostentatious in sharing it with others), I still thought it might be fun to try out a game where you literally battle monsters by spelling out big-ass words. If you care enough to click the little “view story” button, you’ll find out why it’s so badass. After playing it for two hours, I can safely say that it’s more fun that you can comprehend with one hundred percent of your brain....
