Espgaluda II headed to the Xbox 360

Admittedly, I’m notthe shmup guyon the Destructoid staff — there aren’t enough numbers coming out of heads for my tastes. I do, however, know enough to know that Cave means quality when it comes to shooters. If you couldn’t tell by the headline, Cave’sEspgaluda IIis being ported to the Xbox 360 and will hit Japanese shelves sometime next spring, according to SiliconEra. Like all good things Japanese, mum’s the word when it comes to a Western release....

Fantastic Arcade: Retro/Grade is a blast in the pants

[All this week, I’ll be bringing game coverage from indie game festivalFantastic Arcadein Austin, TX. Be sure to checkFlixistfor my coverage of film festival companion Fantastic Fest.] At first glance,Retro/Gradelooks like the world’s worst shoot-em-up. The bullet patterns are completely random, the ship is restricted to five vertical planes and it’s pretty repetitive. Good thing I examined the game further and played through the demo at Fantastic Arcade. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have realized I had mistaken a rather ingenious rhythm game for being a poor shmup....

FIFA 11 to have web-based, console-connected Creation Center

Create-a-player modes have been common in games for more than a decade, but when it came to their implementation in console titles, I’ve found that a controller often isn’t ideal for fiddling with anatomy sliders and scrolling through clothing choices. And I’ve been surprised that, in the modern age of Internet-connected consoles, more developers haven’t leveraged console/PC connectivity to improve the user experience on that front. EA Sports is finally answering my prayers with the newly-announced Creation Center inFIFA Soccer 11....

Final Fantasy XIII composer leaves Square Enix

I’ve always had this daydream of doing something huge and being the most important person at my place of employment, and then quitting right after I became the top dog. It happened a lot in my early years of employment, back when I took sh*t jobs in fast food and data entry. Looking back now, I realize that I would have never done anything important at any of those places....

Game Debate to the Death!Favorite DotA character?

Last week’sdebatemight as well have been aboutLemmings, because while I might have taken the next chronological step in the two partPaper Mariodebate series, it doesn’t change the fact that it was a step right off a cliff into the game debate landslide hall of fame. There have been far more brutal beatings in the past, but that doesn’t make the results any less painful: If there’s one thing to be learned, it’s that you don’t mess withSuper Mario RPG....

Geometry Wars: Galaxies tidbit palooza

Shapes are the worst things in the world, and every time I see one I just want to blast it into oblivion. I’ve always been thankful thatGeometry Warsallowed me the chance to unleash a most hypnotic genocide upon neon versions of thescumbags. Once, I even got over 100,000 points … and then died soon after. Perhaps the Kuju developed Wii and DS versions of the title, collectively known asGeometry Wars: Galaxies, will yield better results....

Get your epilepsy out of my WipEout HD

Apparently, in the future, people don’t have epilepsy. The latest information out ofCVGis that the long-awaited PSN title has been severely delayed. In fact, the game “[failed] the epilepsy tests so much that it has to be re-engineered.” The statement makes you wonder how many people dropped and kissed the floor while trying to play the game during the testing process. This epilepsy stuff always gets to me. Games typically have very clear and distinct warnings on both the title screen and in the manual stating they can cause photosensitive seizures....

Guillerrmo Del Toro calls Team Ico’s games masterpieces

You don’t know who Guillermo Del Toro is, you say? Shame on you if you don’t. The Mexican director is responsible for films such asThe Devil’s Backbone, HellboyandPan’s Labyrinth, and is also one of the only men on the scene with the balls to make dark fantasy great again. In short, one of my heroes. But what does that have to do with Team Ico? In a recent interview withEdgemagazine, Del Toro talked about his affinity for games likeMedal of Honor: Airborne,Call of Duty 4andArmy of Two....

Guilty Gear 2 Overture resurfaces, brings trailer with it

It’s been a while since we saw much at all ofGuilty Gear 2 Overture, but here it is with a fresh trailer showing off the new direction for Arc System Works’ former one-on-one fighter. The main theme I’m getting here is a kind of cross betweenDynasty WarriorsandSonic the Hedgehog.I can see this is already unpopular with a fair few fans, butIam certainly interested. One must admit though — ending your trailer with some of the most obvious graphical clipping in the world probably isn’t a good idea....
