The Daily Hotness: Max Scoville is a deadbeat

PAX was awesome, and even a few days after the fact, the community is still talking about it. If you check out our thread of the day, forum-goer G0bun claims that Scoville bummed some cigs and promised a pack in return. He should get on that. In legitimate gaming news, Team Bondi is shutting down because it can’t pay its bills and Australian PS3 sales jump 400%, and more happened on 9/1/11....

The goggles do nothing: MLB Superstars trailer is full of eye-searing fail

People seem to have taken the term “Black Friday” quite literally today — it’s been a ratherdepressingday, sadly. I hate to contribute salt to an open wound, but it’s a slow day and nobody’s going to see this anyway. Above is a trailer for 2K Sports’MLB Superstars, which wetold you aboutin early September. Way back then, we predicted that it would suck, just from the mere premise, and now that we’ve got video of the game, those suspicions have only been confirmed....

The Jimquisition: Games are not movies, get over it

Oh hello, I didn’t see you there! It’s been a while since we had one of these stupid little videos, isn’t it? Here’s one for you. It hasEscapistwritten on it for some reason. Don’t worry about that. The Jimquisition kicks off with a new series and a fresh flavor as I tackle the rising attitude among developers that videogame should aim to be more like movies. Obviously, I disapprove of this attitude, and tear it a hole in my own particular way....

The Memory Card .45: The birth of the cutscene

Ninja Gaiden While a videogame’s story is one of the most important aspects ofmoderngames, this wasn’t necessarily the case twenty years ago. True, retro designers would verify to create a believable world for their videogame toexist in, but very rarely were stories integrated into the actual gameplay. Think of something likeZelda II: The Adventure of Link. Besides the opening text scroll, there are never really any instances where a dramatic story presents itself — the entire game consists of almost nothing but (exceptional) gameplay....

The new Japanese Let’s Tap commercials are so happy

I truly love my job here at Destructoid. I thank the robot gods daily for my role here. But, wow, am I having a sh*tty morning here. Nothing is going right. Luckily, this Japanese duo ofLet’s Tapcommercials and footage came along to cheer me up. AsNick told us earlier, this game of hitting a cardboard box is a lot more fun than it sounds, and we didn’t even get to try some of thenewer minigameswe’ve been hearing about lately....

The top 10 finalist in the Nintendo Short Cuts contest

Nintendo just released their top 10 choices for theNintendo Short Cuts contest. The first thing you’ll notice is that thePunch-Outvideo, the oneI thought would have a great chance at winning, didn’t make the cut. Considering that some of the entries are well, garbage, it’s really infuriating to seePunch-Outnot even get a mention. So what did make the cut? Well let me break it down to you: The Blue Light Zone: Eye of the Mii-Holder: This is the spoof of the classicTwilight Zoneepisode where the guy had face surgery to become a normal person....

The War of the Worlds gets new screens and a trailer

These AC/DC Live ads will get you pumped

I understand why commercials for music games likeGuitar HeroandRock Bandshow people, well, rocking out — but it always seemed like deceptive advertising to me. Well, I guess “deceptive” isn’t necessarily the correct term. But the ads usually show people jumping around and bobbing their heads, and anyone who’s even a semi-serious music game player knows that if you start really getting into the music, you’re pretty much guaranteed to start missing notes....

TheSpeedGamers to capture all 493 Pokemon for charity

Remember whenPokémongames were limited to just 151 little critters to collect? God, those were the days. I can’t comprehend trying to acquire every Pokémon they’ve come up with since that time. The gang at TheSpeedGamers are made of tougher stuff than I am, apparently. They’ve decided that they’re going to attempt to collect all 493 Pokémon. And they’re going to do it in a 72-hour period, live on the internet, as a charity drive for an Oklahoma-based children’s cancer charity,Ally’s House....
