Nintendo’s most pompous boast yet: Claims we were bored until the Wii saved us

To say that Nintendo has been smug since the Wii became such a huge success is something of an understatement. The company’s press conferences have devolved into long sessions of self-fellatio and big numbers, but it’s thanks toNintendo of America marketing executive Perrin Kaplan that Nintendo has becomeofficiallythe most self-satisfied corporation in all of gaming. Stating that gamers were bored without even knowing it until Nintendo came along, Kaplan essentially claims to be a mindreader....

No RetroforceGO! this week: We all have SARS

Sorry kids, but we won’t be recording this week, due to the fact that 3/4 of the cast is bedridden with some alien flu. Or Tuberculosis. Or something. We’d like to, but it doesn’t exactly make for quality podcasting if we’re all crunching on cough drops and chugging Robitussin while we’re talking. However, Chad is decked out in his white mage’s cloak and is casting a constant stream of Esuna on the rest of us, so we’ll be back next week....

NPD: Epic Mickey sells 1.3 million and other surprises

TheNPD isn’t what it used to be, but we can still utilize their data to gain some idea of which games are making an impact at retail. There aren’t a lot of surprises here, but I was personally shocked to seeEpic Mickeycome in sixth in overall sales for December. Going bythese numbers from theNew York Times, it looks like the game sold approximately 1.3 million units in December alone. Looks like Wii exclusivity might not have been such a bad idea after all....

Penny Arcade, IGN enter verbal kumite, provide idiotic filler for Ol’ Nexy

There’s nothing I like more than kinky sex in dangeous situations, like fellatio in a lion’s cage or bondage play with jars of scorpions and firecrackers. Since that has nothing to do with this story though, let’s assume I said “there’s nothing I like more than two websites bitching at each other over trivial matters,” which is exactly what’s going on between cash-laden corporate games siteIGNand publicly beloved web comicPenny Arcade....

Peripherally speaking: Novint Falcon

To be perfectly honest, I never fully understood the appeal of massive, costly videogame controllers. How can someone justify spending so much on a gadget that only works with a few games? I wouldn’t have been able to answer that question a week ago, but I recently had a change of heart. You see, I received a monstrous box in the mail not too long ago, and its contents showed me the error of my ways....

Podtoid 101: E3, and Nicholson’s Pecs

Podtoid returns after a two-week hiatus, and what do we spend the majority of the episode talking about? Brad Nicholson’sguns, obviously. And some slightly tangential stuff regarding the 2009 E3 Business & Media Summit. But mostly theguns. – I’ve got a video Podtoid on my hard drive, and you will never (want to) see it – Samit and Jim: BFF – Outsourcing, motion control, and sudden sequels – The rebirth of stealth...

Portal 2 DLC only available with $140 controller

Portal 2has received ten levels of downloadable content, and you’re not allowed to play it. That is, unless you throw down $140 for a new controller. Razer’s Hydra motion controller is currently on sale viaSteam’s store, and it’s the only way to obtain the game’s first playable DLC — developed not by Valve, but Sixense Studios. Apparently, the content has been designed specifically to show off the motion controls of the Hydra, so even if you could buy it separately, it’d do you no good....

Preview: Machinarium

If there’s one thing we like here at Destructoid, it’s robots; if there’s two things we like, it’s robots and adventure games. When we received a preview copy ofMachinariumthis weekend, our excitement was as unsurprising as it was vocal (Chad literally used about half dozen smiley-face emoticons after receiving the download link). If you haven’t heard ofMachinarium, it’s an atmospheric, hauntingly well-illustrated indie adventure title from the guys who madeSamorost. Currently slated for an October 2009 release,Machinariumlooks to be a remarkably long (our preview had 23 playable levels out of an ostensible 28) slice of surreal indie adventuring — but is it any good?...

Prince of Persia HD collection coming to US PSN

Previously announced as a European and EMEA exclusive, thePrince of PersiaHD collection has had me snarling with furious jealousy … until now. Ubisoft has revealed during a 2010-2011 financial report that its HD remastering of the classic PS2 games will be coming to the US PlayStation Network as well. As a fan of the series, this is great news to me. I haven’t playedSands of Timein forever, and I was quite annoyed when the collection was reported to snug America....
