After Viacom’s sale of Harmonix, it looks like MTV Games is closing up shop, according to MCV. The company’s international office was reportedly closed on Wednesday, with only a handful of financial staff on hand in the company’s New York offices to handle some loose ends. It’s always sad when any company closes its doors, but it’s not shocking — MTV Games’ only titles were, well, Harmonix games. Hopefully the former MTV Games folks land on their feet sooner rather than later....

NPD Group’s Anita Frazier has cast a grim outlook on the formerly booming music game market, revealing that sales are down 46% from last year. Although things are bleak, it’s not all bad, since music games are still top sellers and the recent release ofThe Beatles: Rock BandandGuitar Hero 5may re-energize things. “Whilesalesof this genre are down 46% year-to-date,” explains Frazier, “unitsalesare down much less because lower prices are playing into the dollarsalesdecline....

Evidently it wasn’t the best year ever for Namco Bandai. With the fiscal year ending on June 15, 2025 the game companyhas releasedits year end earnings with revenues totaled ¥378.55 billion ($4.12 billion), down 11 percent from the previous year. On top of this the company reported net losses of ¥29.08 billion ($316.14 million) for the year, compared to a profit of ¥11.83 billion ($128.8 million) from the previous year....

David Shippy and Mickie Phipps’ new book “The Race for a New Game Machine” has all the videogames industry drama that a person could ask for. The Wall Street Journal recentlyput up a tight synopsis of the book, detailing how Microsoft was able to nab fundamental specifications for the Cell and have their own chip created around them for the Xbox 360. According to the book, Sony decided that the Playstation 3 needed to have a brand new processor, unlike anything their previous consoles featured before....
