Nintendo blows off Japan’s sales slide, has cookies instead

The PS3 has enjoyed a successful few months in the land of the rising sun, beating out sales of the Wii for the past sixty days. The PS3 totaled out at 86,000 units in February, while the Wii was only able to move 76,000. For March, PS3 amped it up even more at 116,000, while Wii sales were only about 70,000. The Wii, losing steam, you say? POPPYCOCK! It’s not like Nintendo to admit anything they’ve ever said or done is wrong though (kind of like all of my ex-boyfriends), and in a recent chat withFinancial Times, a Nintendo spokesperson said that “it is still the first few months of the year when sales are slow for the industry so we are not particularly concerned… we hope to line up strong software to support hardware sales in the second half of the year....

Nintendo, Sega and Ubisoft join the pro-PEGI war machine

The battle for control over Britain’s game ratings rages on as Ubisoft, Sega and Nintendohave shown their supportfor the European PEGI system over the BBFC. They join EA and Microsoft, who have already made claims that the BBFC would cause higher pricers and longer delays. ELSPA head Paul Jackson stated in Whitehall that “PEGI is the solution for today, and the solution for tomorrow.” Bold words indeed, and words that big hitters in the games industry seem to believe in....

Nintendo: ‘No plans’ to bring black Wii to US (racists)

Yesterday,we saw a black Wii boxand it looked very sexy. Unfortunately, Nintendo currentlyhas no plansto bring the saucy little number to the United States, along with any other color that they might cook up. Of course, just because Nintendo says it’s not planning to do something, that doesn’t mean we won’t get it. However, as of right now, all we know is that nothing’s on the schedule, so if you want one of these things, you’re going to have to turn yourself into a Japanese person using science and/or magic....

No Apparent Reason Parties for November!

No Apparent Reason Parties, NARPs for short, are a long standing tradition here at Destructoid. NARPs are parties hosted by Dtoiders for Dtoiders and everyone is welcome to attend a party. It’s about playing games and interacting with other people all in the name of having a good time. November is the month to”give thanks,” and what better way than to show how thankful we are for the Dtoid community by partying!...

Obesity Awareness campaign champions ‘exergames’, whatever the hell that means

What should you do with a fat kid? No, don’t lock him in a cage without food for a week, you jerk. Give him some exergames to play. What are exergames, you ask? Oh, just the latest catchphrase that describes videogames that are designed for movement, such as Wii Fit. At an international health conference held this week in Montreal, organizer of the2008 McGill Health Challenge Think TankLauren Dube commented that exergames are a favorable way for overweight children to stay active....

Off-Brand Games: High Seas Havoc

[Many video games build upon the concepts and mechanics of their forerunners. Off-Brand Games examines those that draw just a little too much… inspiration.] Consider a video game example — who thoughtBrütal Legendwould be an RTS? No, we wanted a heavy metal-themed hack-and-slash with hilarious Jack Black one-liners interspersed throughout. I could say something here about assumptions and how people who “assume” make an “ass” out of “u” and “me,” but let’s be real....

Off-Brand Games: Ruff Trigger: The Vanocore Conspiracy

[Many video games build upon the concepts and mechanics of their forerunners. Off-Brand Games examines those that draw just a little too much… inspiration.] I played the originalRatchet & Clankfor the first time the other week and can easily see the parallels between it and theJakseries. Both star a traditional comedy duo, feature a cache of fantastic and inventive weapons, and even share engine assets. Insomniac and Naughty Dog have made no secret that they were in bed with one another, resulting in a pair of franchises that was the vanguard of the PS2’s platforming library....

Once Upon a Pixel: Chu Chu Rocket

Puzzle games are my favorite genre, and near the tippy top of that list isChu Chu Rocketfor the Dreamcast. Why? It’scertainly not because I’m good at it. A screen exploding with cats and mice creates so much chaos that it’s hard for me to keep up with what’s going on. But it’s that exact thing — chaos — that makes me love it so. There’s no other competitive puzzler that’s as frantic....

Overlord Minions assets for your diabolical pleasure

I loveOverlordand I love my DS, so it’s hardly surprising thatOverlord Minionsis one of my most eagerly awaited games of the summer. Being able to take control of the Minions directly is hopefully going to be a lot of fun, even if they have the most cringesomely unimaginative names I’ve ever seen. Check out our fresh screenshots, and a new trailer after the jump. Evil has rarely looked so adorable. Not since Ted Bundy, that cute little imp....

Passage, Between and Gravitation coming to DSiWare

Jason Rohrer is something of a poster boy for art games, demonstrating that if you use 8-bit visuals, don’t explain yourself, and make a vague allusion to the human condition, you shall be hailed as some sort of artistic mastermind. So yeah, his games are coming to DSiWare. Awesome. Passage,GravitationandBetweenhave all been outed by the ESRB, bungled together asAlt-Play: Jason Rohrer Anthology. Now you’re able to weep physical tears over thirty seconds of non-gameplay while on the bus!...

PAX 09: The Behemoth lanyards are so totally baller

Yeah, that’s right. I just took a picture of my badge to boast about on the homepage. Mostly just because I can, but also because this is by far the coolest event lanyard I have ever gotten. As you can see, it’s a rockin navy blue strap with The Behemoth logo on it and cool white feathers fluttering up. In other words, made of win! And by the way, that’s not my Diet Snapple — you can blame Dale for that....

Peter Molyneux got hate mail for Fable 2’s ending

One of the biggest problems with American audiences in particular is that they need a happy ending. The movie version ofLittle Shop of Horrors, for example, had to have its brilliant dark ending cut because audiences were angry that it wasn’t a saccharine, mollycoddling, happy ending that they could feel good about. It seems gamers suffer from the same mental deficiency, with some going so faras to write hate mailto Peter Molyneux over the wayFable 2concluded....

Podtoid 107: near death experiences

This week’s Podtoid is about as enjoyably typical an episode we’ve ever done: it’s got a good mixture of weird, unstructured BS’ing and Serious News Discussion.
