To use the wretched “haha drugs” cliche,Vanquishdoes look likeGears of Waron acid. However, the original plans might have also had a bit of a sci-fiDynasty Warriorsslant, as the game once intended to drop players into the middle of a big battlefield with tactical objectives to meet.
“Vanquishwas originally an open battlefield type of game,” says director Shinji Mikami, “where the goal was to move around crushing enemy positions; however, once we got started with development, we quickly made the decision to change to a more linear structure. We abandoned the open battlefield and focused on making each stage as visually dense as possible.
“As a result, I think the graphics inVanquishare really quite wonderful. It is one of the main points of Vanquish I want to recommend to people.”
Mikami’s only regret is that it cut down the amount of time people spent boosting around the map, using that ridiculously awesome “rock star slide” to jet from place to place. While I admit it would have been amazing to get around an entire battlefield that way, the game does look pretty damn gorgeous and the gameplay is still absurdly over-the-top, so I guess everybody wins.
This game is going to kick your face off, by the way.
