id Software will releaseDoom Resurrectionon the iPhone AppStore next week,VentureBeatrevealed.
Resurrectionis a new first-person shooterDoomtitle, developed by Escalation Studios with the help of id’s John Carmack, using assets fromDoom 3. The new story takes place alongside the events of the original 2004 first-person shooter, with a full eight levels and up to five hours of gameplay.
Carmack totally hearts the iPhone, calling it a “real game platform, not a tiny little toy.” He says the hardware should make it a better gaming platform than both the PlayStation Portable and the Nintendo DS. The only thing holding it back, he says, is “software inefficiencies.”
He’s talking about the iPhone software itself; he’ll be meeting with Apple soon to offer advice on how to optimize it for gaming. He also says that features of Doom Resurrection, like peer-to-peer cooperative multiplayer, could be unlocked when iPhone 3.0 software is released.
