Deadly Creaturesis one of the fewWii-exclusive games I’m looking forward to in 2009, so I’m always excited to see new information on it. This developer diary from the crew at Rainbow Studios gives us details on the game’s combat, which looks frickin’ sweet. In case you didn’t know, the game features two playable “characters” — a tarantula and a scorpion — and each has its own unique style of play. According to Jordan Itkowitz, the lead designer, “The tarantula is the ninja of [Deadly Creatures],” because it’s more suited to a stealth style. I literally said “Oh, that’sawesome!” out loud when the tarantula pounced on the creature it had been stalking. Later in the game, you’ll get the ability to shoot out a stream of silk and do a Spider-Man-style web jump.On the other hand, the scorpion is a brutish brawler with strong melee attacks. It can use its pincers to get up close and personal with enemies, and its thick armor keeps prey at bay until it can deliver venom with a stinger strike. Like a real scorpion, you’re able to even burrow into the ground and then ambush an unsuspecting enemy. For both arachnids, melee attacks are performed with the Wiimote (for example, making sweeping motions will do swipes with the scorpion’s tail). The tarantula will eventually get the ability to use the Wiimote as a pointer to direct pounces and web jumps. You’ll use combo attacks (Wiimote/Nunchuk) for both creatures; one of the more awesome ones lets the scorpionrip the wings off of an insect.Sounds incredible, doesn’t it? With the voice talents ofDennis HopperandBilly Bob Thorntonas the game’s two human leads, I’m anticipating the game even more. We’ll be able to find out just how awesome (or not)Deadly Creaturesreally is when it launches in February. Hit up mypreviewfrom June or the game’sofficial sitefor more.
