Look at that there fancy magazine talking about that there them new fangled toy T.V. devices. Yuppers, the fancyTimemagazine does a cute little stories on thatHalosgame that has the aliens dealing with Floods and the pew pew pewing. ThemTimesreally knows lots about theHalos. Why take a look here at this quote:
The Bungies bring a grinding, jeweler’s meticulousness to what most people consider an unhealthy amusement for children.
Why I reckon this boy knows lots about gaming and … OK, that’s enough. I can’t continue to dumb myself down to the level of Lev Grossman, the writer for this poorly written piece onHalo 3for this months issue ofTime Magazine:
Not that the Bungies care. They don’t need to legitimizeHaloby associating it with other, more respectable media. They sell enough units and make enough money. They’re happy in their invisible geek ghetto. But that’s the logic of the marketplace: it can’t leave subcultures alone; it has to turn them into cultures. It may be time for the Master Chief to come in from the cold and join the party, with the popular kids.
More after the jump.
Some parts of the article seem like Lev actually knows what he’s talking about and understands gaming. But then the bits about “ghetto”, the lack of fact checking on some of the stuff he says and (the icing on the cake) referring to Bungie as “the Bungies”. Is that some sort of attempt to introduce the Internets slang toTimereaders? I wonder if next month’s cover story will be about thelolowlfad.
All in all, the worst part of the article has to be this:
Not that the Bungies care. They don’t need to legitimize Halo by associating it with other, more respectable media … They’re happy in their invisible geek ghetto.
More respectable media? Videogames ARE part of a respectable media that has donebetter than the movie industryin the last few years and is expected to overtake the music industry in the next couple of years. The only good part of this whole thing is that Lev has made me bring back the famousWood Chipper award.
What do you think of all this? Am I over-blowing this whole thing or are you as sick and tired as I am to read this kind of ignorance by people who don’t seem to know a thing about their subject piece?
