So let’s say that I give you free reign to re-create any classic NES title with a full 3D overhaul and new features for a downloadable current-gen game console. What would you pick? I know for sure it wouldn’t be the 1985 cave-mining NES classicSpelunker.

Sure enough, right there at Sony’s massive Tokyo Game Show booth, among the other PlayStation network titles wasMinna de Spelunker. This game takes the original craptastic/difficult controls and mechanics of the original NES title and slaps a pretty new face on them. And, other than some multiplayer action, that’s about it. In fact, if you’re a sicko or a glutton for punishment, you may opt to use the original graphics over the shiny new upgraded ones.

I watched for a good long time as just about everyone that tried to play Minna de Spelunker died, over and over. On more than one occasion I saw gamers leave the kiosk without even finishing the demo. Seeing that, we can definitely say that this new version is faithful to the original title.

If you really enjoy falling down often, you’ll be glad to know that Minna de Spelunker is coming to the PlayStation Network in Japan sometime this winter. No price or US release date has been anounced. I don’t know about you, but I’m totally cool with that.
