Being captured by maniacs with guns isn’t all bad, sometimes. While the popular image of an Iraqi abduction brings televised beheadings to mind, the Islamic Shia Resistance is a touch more merciful, if no less barmy, than the average Middle Eastern nutter, providing their hostages with the most modern of comforts. Once they’ve earned it, at least.

UK IT specialist Peter Moore, who was keeping his head down in Baghdad, found himself kidnapped by the group in May 2007. His four bodyguards had been killed but Moore was kept alive. For two years they treated him pretty badly, but suddenly decided to be nice and give him access to a TV, a laptop and even a PlayStation.

While two-and-a-half years in captivity, seemingly for no reason, will doubtless be damaging for Moore, he is quoted by papers as having been kept “sane” thanks to the PlayStation. So there you go. Free videogames if you get captured by extremist Muslim psychos. That’s still a better deal than anything GameStop will offer you, and with slightly less terrorism involved!
