Square Enix president Yoichi Wada has admitted thatFinal Fantasy XIIIwasn’t perfect, and that certain elements could have been improved. Of course, when you’ve sold insane amounts of a game already, it’s pretty easy to get critical. Wada blames development costs for the game’s downsides.

“I believe this is a well done game, however there are points we could improve on,” he confesses. “to realize those improvements we would have to incur more development costs. Therefore, I would rather not elaborate on that.”

It’s a shame Wada won’t be drawn on pointing out some of the flaws. It’s obvious by now that Iwasn’t a fanof the game, despite being a lover ofFinal Fantasy, and I know for a fact that I am not alone in my thinking. I think the major issue wasn’t so much the high cost as the wrongful allocation of budget. So much money spent on graphics, seemingly none on a script editor.

Fortunately, there are plenty more JRPGs coming this year to fill the gap. Ironically, they’re all on Wii, where providing ludicrously opulent graphics won’t be a concern. From where I’m standing, that’s only a good thing.
