Don’t feel so bad about the delay ofSplinter Cell ConvictionandRed Steel 2; it’s for the best. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemont said in an investors conference call yesterday that it’s “a question of polish.”

“The team was asking that they couldn’t be with the level of quality on all the maps and all the game for the end of the year,” he says, “so they had asked for more time to be able to come with a better product, for both games.”

Based on my personal experience with both games, I’d say thatRed Steel 2could probably benefit from more time in the oven. The ideas were there, but that “polish” Guillemont speaks of certainly was not.Conviction,on the other hand, looked about as polished as it could get; the game even leads the way asGamePro‘s cover storyon hot fall games.

But of course, little polished slices of game are difficult to judge, and not indicative of the product as a whole. Guillemont confirms those suspicions.

“The quality of the games is there for what you’ve been able to see at E3, but we were not able to have that same quality on the full game of those two products,” he explains.

No worries, we’re patient. We can wait, right?
