Another little pleasant surprise for me at Sony’s Gamers Day was the PSP titleSOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Tactical Strike. Seeing as how I was never really got into the PlayStation 2’s first-person shooters, I never got into the wholeSOCOMthing — mostly because I never had that Internet adapter. But, with thePlayStation 3 versioncoming out soon and this PSP title, I think my tune may soon change.
Before you write this off as just anotherSOCOMtitle, this isn’t what you think.Tactical Strikeis an RTS, a close-up and personal RTS and I like it, a lot. In fact, besides maybeWarhawk, it was probably the game I spent the most time with at the event. I’m a sucker for war games and I’m a sucker for RTS, so this was a perfect match for me.
In trying to describe this game, look at it as this: ThinkGhost Recon, but instead of being in first-person mode and shooting people, you’re just controlling the squad that does all the killing. You can set waypoints, upload custom teams, and set specific fire functions, etc. Even better is that the whole thing can be played via Ad Hoc and Infrastructure.
With games such asTactical StrikeandGod of War: Chains of Olympuson the PSP horizon, maybe this little handheld’s got a bit of life in it afterall.
