Sad about Fatal Frame IV? You could use this fan translation

Fatal Frame IVisofficially not coming to the US, and fans are not pleased about it. Having purchased every game in the series since the first one, I had planned to import it and stumble through with my shabby hiragana skills, but it seems as if I may not have to.A fan translationlooks to be underway, and as of the time of this post is 45 percent completed. All you will need to use the patch is an imported version of the game, which you’re able to order through vendors such asPlay-Asia, an SD card and the Homebrew channel installed on your Wii....

SDCC: New Singularity screens have plenty of gore and ghouls

Singularityis a piercing amalgamation of H.G. Well’sThe Time MachineandDoom. In the game, players will control a yet-to-be-named protagonist thrust into a curious situation while investigating a Soviet military experiment: time, we’ve learned, is shifting rapidly as the nameless protagonist begins putting together the pieces of a conspiracy. Players will be forced to fight against creeps and creatures in both the 1950s and modern day as the story unfolds. However, the time shifting won’t be purely a progression element....

Sega confirms Sonic Unleashed: I’m trying really hard not to use a pun here

Well, it’s about damn time. After all that(rather baseless) legal posturing, it’s official: Sega’s Sonic Team is hard at work — and has been for aroundthree years— on a brand-new adventure featuring their most iconic character. In a press release sent out this morning (after the jump), Sega gave us an overview ofSonic Unleashed, which is being developed for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation 2.The story, which you probably couldn’t care less about, isn’t anything groundbreaking: Dr....

Shadow of the Colossus’ controls are an exercise in art

The “videogames as art” movement is a funny thing Artsy wonks like myself love to wax philosophic about the potential that games have in terms of narration or eliciting meaningful, emotional player responses. We laud innovative game designers for forcing us to make morally ambiguous choices about ourselves and the characters around us. Unfortunately, games fall short in one crucial, yet easily overlooked, way: they only go half of the distance....

Sine Mora posters and details land

I realize that a poster hardly makes for new information on a game, but when said poster is for a new Suda51 game and also happens to be made out of a rare material called “awesome,” it warrants its own post. We get two versions, too! One with blurry super effects and one that lets us truly get a good look at the ship, the one I assume we will be piloting in the upcoming shmup....

Social game survey: Average gamer is 43-year-old woman

A survey targeting social gamers, conducted by ISG for PopCap, has revealed a surprising fact: the average social gamer is a 43-year-old woman. I picture a “cougar” still in last night’s make-up, hair sticking up, in a bathrobe, sipping coffee, and playingFarmVilleor something similar. The breakdown of the survey, which covered both the US and the UK, says that our average is actually a 48-year-old. Your mom! And get this: 46% of those social gamers are age 50 or over....

Sony Japan files ‘PlayStation Arc’ trademark

Okay, we get it — Sony’s motion controller is probably called “Arc.” Sony has just filed for trademark of PlayStation Arc in Japan, following rumors, adomain name registration, and various high-level execs talking about it like it’s official. Yet still no official word from Sony on the product name, still referring to it simply as the “Motion Controller.” Next week at GDC, Sony plans to unveil the controller, along with (likely) its official name… which, considering the evidence, is probably “Arc....

Spend the weekend dying in Give Up, Robot 2

It’sno secretthat I adoreGive Up, Robot. When I heard earlier today thatMatt Thorsonwas back with a sequel, I naturally freaked out — both because this follow-up is quite good and “Oh no, I have way too much going on right now to spend the entire day dying in some flash game!” Give Up, Robot 2builds upon the awesome grapple hook foundation using stuff like boss battles and random objects with smiling faces; thinkYoshi’s Islandwith one-hundred percent less crying babies....

Stranglehold is ‘golden’ and will be upon us soon

Word out of Midway’s camp is thatStrangleholdhas finally gone gold, and will be ready to fill the void of Xbox 360’s everywhere come September 5th. While a simultaneous release would have been ideal, PS3 and PC fans will have to wait but just a few more weeks to get in on the action. So why do I care? I’ve always had a love affair with theMax Paynegames. In turn, I tend to be attracted to other games that resemble it....

TGS: Alice has a rough trip back to Wonderland

American McGee’s Alicewas… something. I’ll admit that my memories of the game are a bit on the hazy side, but I recall being impressed with the visuals, fascinated by the take on Wonderland and a little bit disappointed by the gameplay. I think that’s mostly down to the jumping. On the first two, this trailer EA has released forAlice: Madness Returnshits the mark wonderfully. Here’s to hoping that the game can deliver on the latter....

TGS: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow trailer is too long

When I think ofCastlevania, I don’t think of sweeping, epic storylines. I think of skellingtons throwing their own bones and kick-ass music. Here comes of Lords of Shadow to confound expectations with a trailer that exceeds seven minutes and looks incredibly self-important. Mumm-Ra fromThundercatsis apparently in it, though. The game looks hot regardless of its pomposity, and I think I’ll be picking this one up. It’s out on October 5....
