Microsoft: Kinect is exactly like Mario Bros.

Using the spoken word to communicate what makes a Kinect game more fun than a non-Kinect game is an uphill battle. For one, it’s not terribly easy to find someone in the gaming press that likes Kinect all that much, and if you do, they may not have more to say beyond “Movearaoundalot! Movearound! Goooooood!“ Microsoft’s Kudo Tsunoda has an interesting approach on to explaining what makes Kinect so great:...

Microsoft’s patent for ‘magic wand’ doesn’t sound very manly

I think of two things when I hear ‘magic wand.’ One is something you’d give to a little girl to make her a happy little princess. The other is something you’d hand to an older girl to make her a happy little princess. Neither mental image has anything that would connect it to Microsoft or gaming. J Allard filed a gaming-related patent for a magic wand in November of 2007.Edgesays that this patented device can “utilize one or more sensor from a collection of sensors to determine an orientation or gesture in connection with the wand....

Mirror’s Edge is in first person to provide ‘connection,’ not regurgitation

The reason EA DICE went with the first-person perspective inMirror’s Edgewasn’t to torture players who occasionally experience motion sickness. It was a conscious decision designed to make players feel more connected with the game’s protagonist, Faith, and her movements. It was also because DICE is pretty familiar with the perspective. The producer for the game, Nick Channon recently explained the design decision in aninterview with Gamasutra. Channon said that DICE has “done a lot of first person work” and were “inspired” to doMirror’s Edge....
