A new trailer has been unearthed forMortal Kombat, detailing the “Challenge Tower” and all its nefarious offerings. This new mode has a selection of silly mini-games and special missions that find new ways to implement the game’s fight engine. A new game is Test Your Luck, in which a slot reel determines your opponent, bonuses and limitations in an upcoming match. LikeFinal Fantasy VII‘s arena mode, only more violent. I’ve always admiredMortal Kombat‘s desire to be more than just a fighting game....

2K Sports has retained its place atop the basketball simulation throne, and it looks like they’ll stay there for a while. The publisher proclaimed in a press release today that it has sold more than two million copies ofNBA 2K10worldwide, a 60% year-over-year improvement for the same October-through-January time frame (2K10’s sales increase was likely helped by its Wii and PSP versions, which did not exist forNBA 2K9). These sales numbers are all the more impressive for having come amid what was, by most accounts, a strong effort from EA inNBA Live 10(albeit one that sold even fewer units thanNBA Live 09)....

Considering my high level of personal interest in the musical style calledVocaloid, I brought you as much news as possible on the Hatsune Miku PSP gameProject Diva. While the game certainly presented ample amounts of fanservice for fans of the digital popstar, it also held up nicely as a fun rhythm title, and the sales were apparently pretty good. So good, in fact, thatAlafistareports there is already a sequel in the works....

It’s been a while since Deck 13 talked about its upcoming RPGVenetica, but here they are with a second behind-the-scenes documentary video. I may not buy any of this week’s downloadable games for Nintendo platforms, but even still, they are able to entertain me with their silly names. It’s almost as if the developers are trying to see who can come up with the most outlandish title and have it actually release. On DSiWare, we’re looking atArt of Ink(800 points), which almost sounds like a tattoo parlor tycoon-type experience;Slingo Quest(800 points), a game that does the unthinkable by combining slots and bingo; andEscape Trick: The Secret of Rock City Prison(500 points), a “breakout adventure game....

Anyone looking for a cheaper version of the Nintendo DS can now grab one of three Nintendo water-based games housed in a Nintendo DS like case. Available in Japan, you can choose from Luigi’s Tetris, Mario’s Fireballs or Mario’s coins. If these games scream “must have” to you, then check outRakutento order them.

NIS America dropped two new titles on us, and we’re looking forward to getting our hands on both of them. Of course, there’s a Disgaea game. This time it’sDisgaea 2: Dark Hero Days. This is a new PSP version of the PlayStation 2 gameDisgaea 2, and it adds new story chapters and a new main character to play as. “Conquer the world of level grinding,” they say. I love Disgaea in portable form....

Activision has made an announcement this morning about some of the voice talent which will be appearing inCall of Duty: Black Ops. It’s now officially confirmed that Treyarch has brought Gary Oldman back to reprise the role he played inWorld at War, Victor Reznov. Ed Harris (The Abyss) will be providing his voice to a CIA operative named Jason Hudson. In addition to the voice talent, another Hollywood name has been attached to the project....

Chillingo isn’t famous for releasing horror FPS games, but when you’re backed up by Electronic Arts, I guess you can do anything. Based on the classic PC shooter,Painkiller Purgatorypromises to be a “true step forward” for iOS FPS games. I take that to mean the controls won’t be absolutely horsepiss. You can get the game for youriPhone/iPodor anHD iPad alternative. It’ll cost $4.99 or $7.99, depending on your poison. Anybody into it?...

PAX East 2011 is looking better by the second and thepanel schedule looks like it’srocking. This year’s keynote is byJane McGonigal, author of “Reality is Broken” and one of the creative minds behind I Love Bees. The keynote begins at 10:30AM at the Main Theatre. Around that same time, I’m going to be on a panel!The Online Gaming Communities and “Real Life” Relationships panelis being held in the Cat Theatre on Friday from 11:00AM to 12:00PM....

Yeah that’s right! We’re hosting TWO panels at PAX Prime this year. “How to Run Your Own Gaming Website and Win at Life” will be hosted by Dtoid’s founder, Niero, onSaturday at 12:30 PM at the Unicorn Theatre. Niero will be chatting about how to run a videogame blog and what he’s learned these past five years living the dream. He’ll be joined by our very own Nick Chester and also accompanied by Craig Skistimas from Screw Attack and will be moderated by Sean St Clair from Glyde....

[Update:Techland is claiming that the full retail version of the game is going up on Steam today (thanks, Aurvant). Only those who downloaded the game early have gotten the dev version, which one can assume will be overwritten this morning. Doesn’t help that the authentication processes and servers were revealed by this unplanned release, either. Smooth move!] The PC version ofDead Islandhas caused a considerable upset, with the potential discovery that it may be a port of the Xbox 360 developer build....

You know Japan, I’ve been thinking, and realized I kind of hope you die some days. You get every freaking game I want while I sit over here in the US festering in my hopes that even one of these titles will get imported, and they never do, and I played Phantasy Star games faithfully as a child but what do I get, a get an INCOMPLETE COLLECTION ON THE GAMEBOY ADVANCE THAT DOES NOT CONTAINPHANTASY STAR IV, WHAT KIND OF CRAP IS THAT?...
