F.E.A.R developer says publishers ‘killed off’ the fanbase

F.E.A.R 2art lead Dave Matthews (not from the band) hasrevealed his theorythat former publishers Sierra and Vivendi helped to kill off some of the fans. He states that the IP had been mishandled with ports and expansions that nobody cared about. I heard publishers did that, actually. Monolith, the original developer, is refusing to acknowledge the games created without their input as canon. Matthews states thatExtraction PointandPerseus Mandateare now set in an alternate universe....

Fallout: New Vegas mocks JRPGs with new advert

There are a number of notable differences between Western and Japanese RPGs, the most notable of which is the obviousness of linearity. In a JRPG, your quest is usually very fixed, with a definite plot and an order in which things are done.Fallout: New Vegasis Western through and through, and has poked fun at linear RPGs with a new Japanese ad. The protesters in this poster are holding up signs that mock traditional JRPGs, with signs that read, “A game where you just follow the scenario is like living life on rails”, “When did games become something that you watch?...

Forums, we have them: April 2011

[Gyrael is to blame for this header.] This month in the Forums: PAX East happened, lots of highly anticipated video game releases happened, and Destructoid’s fifth anniversary happened. Some other stuff also happened, but you’ll have to read more to find out about those happenings. I hate colds. I hate it even more when I somehow manage to get two colds back to back. I’m pretty sure there’s something in the Constitution outlawing that....

Free App of the Day: Rapture Raptor

Ladies and gentlemen, I am thrilled to report that today’s Free App of the Day is, in fact, anANDROIDgame! Hooraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! Rapture Raptoris likePrimal Ragewithout the fighting part, since the aim of the game is to make a giant dinosaur eat loads of people. You shake your phone to send innocent victims into the air, then touch the screen to make the Raptor move left and right, standing under your food in order to snap them up....

Free App of the Day: ReBounce: Evolved Breaking

The Free App pickings have been slim today, but OpenFeint’sFreeGameoftheDayinitiative has come to the rescue with a pretty decent offering. It’s calledReBounce: Evolved Breakingand, while not being worth its usual asking price, is a good deal at free. You basically use your finger to whiz a little puck around the screen and break things. It starts off dull but gets more interesting and creative as it goes on. I liked it, and I think a fair few of you will as well....

Game Debate to the Death!Guitar Hero free for all

Last week‘s debate might as well have been “Is Jack Thompson an idiot or not?” — because one of theGrand Theft Autocontenders had a flat tire right from the starting line. Here are the unnecessary photo finish results: It just goes to show you should never mess with the 80s, and yet, I shall put the decade debates to the test once again. This week’s matchup is a music freebirdfor all between all four of theGuitar Herogames that have been released so far....

Games time forgot: Get Medieval

Last week’s forgotten game,Kingdom O’ Magic, was a fun-filled adventure game that lovingly parodied theLord of the Ringsseries and other swords-n-spells type epics. This week’s,Get Medieval, uses pretty much the same subject matter but with completely different gameplay — whereKingdomwas clever,Get Medievalis violent. If you haven’t played a truly old-school game in a long time, or if you long for the days when theGauntletfranchise was worth a damn, thenGet Medievalmay interest you....

GDC 2007: Phil Harrison’s keynote; alternative reaction (with bonus Churchill)

We just wrapped up the keynote presentation by Phil Harrison, and asRobert has already mentioned, it was quite impressive. It certainly helps that the British are naturally as charming as Christ, but, beyond that, what was on display was quite spectacular, as well. Now, don’t get me wrong, I still believe Sony would have been as effective as they had been this last year if they had just bludgeoned the general public repeatedly with hammers, instead of actually releasing anything, but they do have some very shiny things coming in the near future....

Get it?Dragon Swords? DS? See what they did there? Man, that really never gets old, guys. Please, keep doing that, because its exponentially more clever each time someone does it. If the platform of choice doesn’t surprise you (Team Ninja had previously revealed they were working on an untitled DS game, as well as one for the Sony PSP), maybe the way you play will....

Greenberg responds to PlayStation Move … kind of

Microsoft demagogue Aaron Greenberg has responded to this week’s official unveiling of the PlayStation Move … by talking about how great Project Natal is. When asked about Sony’s Wiimote, the Hype Meister simply explained how Natal, with its lack of physical controller, was the future. “Xbox 360 has a strong history of innovation,” he coos. “Halo, Xbox Live and instant-on 1080p HD. With each of these, we had our sights set on the future — and it paid off for us, the industry and Xbox 360 owners....
