Despite Nintendo pimping the3DSand Sony gearing up to launch thePlayStation Vita, Korean tech company LG has declared the age of pure gaming handhelds over. Well, Nintendo and Sony better pack up and go home now. “The era of dedicated handheld gaming platform is over,” said CEO Dr. Jong-seok Park. “Today’s smartphones have the horsepower to compete with the best portable gaming devices and LG Optimus 3D is our proof.” The above quote is an edited version of what Park originally said, which the company quietly removed from its updated press release....

A developer patching a broken game is not exactly a new concept. Fixing a broken game that is designed to give players access to more materials in another game is a totally different scenario. If you didn’t know, there is apretty nasty exploitin theFortune’s TowerPub Game that lets players make an infinite amount of money. This money can then translate toFable 2and therefore get you the snazziest outfits, booze, hookers, and houses in the game....

At today’s conference at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, LucasArts surprised everyone (and no one) by announced the Traveler’s Tales developedLego Indiana Jones: The Videogame. Set to hit consoles in the Summer of 2008, the game will follow and parody the film trilogy, much in the same vein of the popularLego Star Warstitles. Oh, the marriage of Legos with popular franchises — how we can’t get enough of you! This title is the latest in theLego (insert nerdy franchise here)series, that also includes the recently announcedLego Batmantitle....

Quantum of Solaceis the first 007 game for thisnextcurrent generation of consoles, coming from developer Treyarch to both the Xbox 360 and PS3 this fall. It’s based on the storyline of bothQuantum of SolaceandCasino Royale, so the developers have worked to make the game fit as closely as possible to the movies’ worlds. In this new trailer titledBehind the Scenes: From Film to Game, the developers discuss what measures they took to give theQoSgamer the same type of experience as theQoSmoviegoer....

Specifics have been few and far between forMedal of Honor‘s multiplayer component, which is unfortunate. I’m eager to see what DICE will be packing this time around, and on that note, many of us are dying to hear more about the upcoming beta. We know it’s on the way, and little else. According to a retailer listing forMedal of Honorover at Play.com, we can expect the multiplayer beta to go from July 5 to the 17th for those who pre-order....

If there’s any game franchise that does its strange, out-of-place product placementright, it’s theMetal Gearfranchise. FromCalorie Mateto Japanese idol magazines to iPods to instant ramen,Metal Gearsqueezes it in and makes it feelright, somehow. Now that magic has been extended to Mountain Dew, withJapan getting a set of eight promotional “Mountain Dew: Peace Walker” cans, decorated with pictures of characters that I do not recognize at all, besides Snake. Players can expect to encounter cans of Mountain Dew in-game as well, though their actual effect is as of yet unstated....

While gamers have argued that $149.99 is too expensive for a glorified EyeToy, Microsoft maintains that not only is Kinect competitively priced, it offers better value than either the Wii or PlayStation Move. In fact, company man Brett Siddons invites gamers to “do the math” when comparing prices. “What do you need and what do actually have to spend for a two player game for this device versus that device. You actually find that [Kinect] is very competitively priced,” he says....

Today on through Sunday, the “Variety Map Pack” forCall of Duty 4: Modern Warfarehas been marked down to $5 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. While chances are if you actively play(ed) the game, you would’ve already downloaded the excellent set of maps, I suppose it’s never too late if you missed out. Just a quick refresher: the add-on contains “Broadcast,” “Creek,” “Chinatown,” and “Killhouse.” All of ’em are solid maps, and to this day, it’s been one of my favorite pieces of downloadable content so far this generation....

We know that Capcom is bringingMonster Hunter Frontierto the Xbox 360 in Japan, but that’s about it. What about us? Yeah, still no word on that. But there is some information on cross-platform play for the Japanese gamers that will have access to it. Famitsu had a chat with Microsoft Japan’s Takashi Sensui, Capcom’s Kenji Inafune, and Yoshinori Ono for an interview on the upcoming title. It seems that Microsoft is hosting the servers for the Xbox 360 version of the game, which means that players of the PC version will not be able to play with Xbox 360 players....

Sony has been sued so many times that they now probably just shrug it off and go about their evening. We wouldn’t be surprised to hear that the suits at Sony have the word ‘lawsuit’ flagged to get picked up by their spam filter. Hopefully this one made it into the inbox, as the new suit makes a pretty big claim. A California-based company called Parallel Processing filed a suit that claims that Sony’s Cell processor infringes on patent number 5,056,000, otherwise known as “Synchronized Parallel Processing with Shared Memory”....

In the grand scheme of things, having to use a disc to stream Netflix-flavored movie magic to your PlayStation 3 is, well, about as high on the list as needing to point your TV remote in every conceivable direction before the cable box finally picks up the signal. Nonetheless, itisan inconvenience. But don’t lose faith yet, young one: the answer to our first-world-problem prayers is coming. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, during the company’s second quarter earnings call, was quoted as saying, “Before our next call in October, we expect to be launching a major new version of our Sony PS3 user interface which doesn’t require a disc, and is dynamically updated continuously with the latest Netflix UI improvements....
