E3 08: Trailer for Capcom’s quirky new downloadable title, Flock!

A couple of videos for Capcom’s strange new puzzle downloadable title,Flock!, have hit the web, and I didn’t want to pass up on the opportunity to spread the word about the game. I’ve officially fallen in love withFlock!‘s visual style; it’s simplistic enough to work well for the XBLA and PSN medium without being so simple that it looks lazy or uninspired. It’s a little hard to tell exactly what the hell is going on in the second video below, which is made up of footage from what looks to be one of the game’s later levels, so I’d advise you to readColette’s hands-onwithFlock!...

E3 09: Alan Wake confirmed for Spring 2010, has gameplay

Alan Wakehas finally broken its lengthy vow of silence and put in an appearance at E3, by way of Microsoft’s press conference. During a live demo of the game, Remedyfinallyshowed off what this mysterious title is all about, shedding some light on a game that has existed as little more than a name and a premise until now. They even gave us a release window, too. How nice. The game is set up with TV show-style “previously on” introductions, very much like the episodic stages of Eden’sAlone in the Dark, with Alan Wake himself narrating the story while trudging in the darkness with a flashlight....

E3 09: Final Fantasy XIV is an MMO and…that’s all we know!

I just stepped out of the“secret” press conference Square Enix hostedand, well, it was a ratherinterestingexperience. It wasn’t terrible by any means — in fact, everyone there could not have been nicer or more gracious — but theentirefocus was on nothing but therecently announcedFinal Fantasy XIV. This would have been fine, but once the conference started the moderator came out and immediately opened the floor to questions. But … but … none of us knew anything about the game outside of the quick trailer shown at Sony’s presentation yesterday....

E3 09: I pressed my luck with Press Your Luck 2010

Earlier today, I stopped by theTarget Bullseye Loungeto check out two of Ubisoft’s upcoming Wii-exclusive titles. The first of which wasPress Your Luck 2010, a practically flawless representation of the 80’s game show. As I played, I realized the game’s imitation of the source material is its Achilles heel. On one hand, you’re playingPress Your Luck— you’re answering trivia questions, earning spins on the legendary 18-space game board rife with Whammys and prizes....

E3: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning looks pretty damn great

Big Huge Games showed off a tiny bit ofKingdoms of Amalur: Reckoningand it looks pretty good already. “A Hero is reborn … to hunt his killer … and change the fate of Amalur” the trailer said. And from the looks of it, that is done with hacking, slashing, and lots and lots of spell casting. You’ll also be able to grab enemies from afar, do killing animations, and fight big bosses....

Euro trademark for Yakuza game could be Yakuza Of The End

A European trademark popped up just yesterday from Sega for “Yakuza: Dead Souls.” We’re on the same page asJoystiq: this could be a better, more western subtitle for “Of the End.” Dead Souls? Zombies? Yes, it sounds likeYakuza: Of The End. I feel pretty good about this one. I’d be happy to see it localized, but this only makes a small dent in the Yakuza series titles we need to get....

Ex-Ensemble staff form another company, Bonfire Studios

By now, youhave probably heardthat a new development team, Robot Entertainment, was formed out of the remains of real-time strategy king Ensemble Studios. But wait, there’s more: a second company has been created from former Ensemble staff, calling itselfBonfire Studios. “Ensemble was one of the few studios with two A-teams,” commented president and CEO David Rippy on the newly-founded company. “We are already working on an original IP that we’ll start talking about in the next few months,” he concludes....

Failed Braid cookie

I’d like to think that I am pretty good with videogames in the kitchen. I have made some pretty kickin’CactuarandBioShockcakes. I have also experimented withEarthBoundcookies. Today, I think I finally met my maker with theBraidcookie pictured above. The idea was spawned in our office in-between conversations about theStar Wars Unleasheddemo and protein bars. Nick suggested that I try makingone of the enemiesinBraid, and so I was forced to oblige. We don’t know what the enemy’s name is, nor have I ever played the game before....

Family gaming a waste of time? We sure don’t think so

It may be hard to imagine now, but there was a time when it was commonplace for the whole family to sit around the kitchen table with a board game likeMonopolyorChutes and Ladders, and spend fun-filled episodes of quality time with one another. Some would say that times are different now. Families find themselves increasingly busier than ever, and setting aside time to game just doesn’t seem to have the priority it once commanded....

Fanboy Friday: Less QQ please

It’s weeks like these where I’m reminded how the smallest, slightest thing can set fanboys off into a spiraling whirlwind of bitching, whining, and (presumably) self-loathing. This week is going to be a little bit shorter than usual, but the circumstances behind the outrage make it much funnier. Remember how yesterday it turned out thatModern Warfare 2is gettingCall of Dutythrown back in the name? If you missed it,Robert Bowlingrevealed it on his Twitter with ashot of the box design....

First Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance trailer

Here we have the debut trailer forKingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, shown today as part of a Square Enix press event. It’s small, screen-capped from a feed and overlayed with moonspeak, but there it is. Sora and Riku teaming up over something I cannot possibly comprehend. I absolutely adoredKingdom Hearts, enough so that I saw my way through its sequel. I found the continuing adventures of Sora and company to be primarily interested in obfuscating a threadbare plot as meaningful and exploiting attachment to previously well-crafted characters....
