Captivate 2011 round-up: Zombies, dragons, Hadoukens!

Capcom held its annual Captivate event for its press and retail partners in Miami last week. I was there, and I had plenty to report. A newDead Rising? Check. MoreStreet Fighter IV? Check. Dragons? Dogmas? Done and done. The embargo just lifted, and there’s a lot to soak in; here it is, all in one place. Full disclosure: Capcom covered both travel costs and lodging for me while I attended this event....

Carnage coming to Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2

I can’t say thatMarvel Ultimate Alliance 2was really my thing. Tried it, didn’t get along with it. However, what Icansay is thatCarnage is badass, so it’s pretty awesome that he’s bringing his own brand of gooey red psychopathy to Activision’s comic-themed RPG. According to Brad Nicholson, who played more of the game than me, Venom sucks, so there’s a chance Carnage may suck as well. In any case, he’s a brilliant character and I’d be tempted to play some more of the game again just to try him out....

Crystal Dynamics: Bringing online to Guardian of Light

Much like the Xbox Live Arcade version that shipped last month,Lara Croft and the Guardian of Lightwon’t support online cooperative play on PlayStation Network and PC when it’s released on September 28. But don’t worry, it’s coming in a game update. When it does, developer Crystal Dynamics is certain the online experience will be as solid as the experience offline. “Our goal from the very beginning [was] to make sure players had the same abilities that they find in other online co-op games,” Crystal Dynamics Global Brand Director Karl Stewart tell us....

Custom made Piranha Plant is scary as sh*t!

I used to think Piranha Plants were cute. That’s all changed after seeing this Piranha Plant model by Deviant Art userKalapusa. The extreme Piranha Plant was made out of acrylics, clay and a wire skeleton and you can see a making of video after the break. It was also made with pure evil. Even though it’s scary as hell, I really want one for my front yard now. It’ll keep those damn kids off my lawn, that’s for sure....

Dead Risingdid well everywhere but in places where the Xbox 360 is largely ignored, so for that reason alone it’s great to see it get this second chance at life....

Destructoid interview: Starbreeze Studios

Tigon and Starbreeze Studios’sEscape from Butcher Bayfloored me when it was released in 2004. The blend of superb story, gripping narration, and diverse gameplay was nothing less than satisfying. It was a surprise as well. Who saw a great movie-based videogame coming? As gamers, we’re used to having to sludge through adaptations of movies we love. It seems like the titles we want the most ultimately provide the worst experiences. This happens for a variety of reasons (including our own unrealistic expectations), but I like to think that marketing is the root of the problem....

Developers not developing as many Wii games

While this holiday season and past month saw a solid resurgence in high quality games landing on the Wii (with the likes ofNew Super Mario Bros.andNo More Heroes 2be released), it appears that developers are shying back away from the system. According to a recent survey conducted by Game Developer Research, the number of developers working on the Wii has gone down since last year. With 41 percent of the respondents saying that they made games for consoles, only 30 percent of them said that they are working on the Wii....

Does the PC need casual games to survive as a gaming platform?

Does the PC need casual games to survive as a gaming platform? Probably not, but a new focus on the growing trend could help in the battle against gaming consoles. Panelists from Nvidia, Intel, Microsoft, Electronic Arts, and Crytek atGeForce LAN 4were naturally positive about the state of PC gaming at their panel, but that doesn’t change the fact that PC gaming sales numbers are down, fallling $970 million in 2006 from 2001’s $1....
