Watch this emotional EVO 2011 ‘Moments’ video

This is a different kind of video. Rather than show thevirtual fights of EVO, Richard Li puts the emphasis on the same great moments as they happened off screen. It’s about the players, and the community. For anyone that actually attended the event, I have to imagine this footage is bittersweet. It came across that way to me as someone who wasn’t there in person, although to be honest, I was mostly just hoping the guy with the salt-shaker sign would make a cameo....

What’s up with Joy Ride? Microsoft goes cryptic

Joy Rideis one of those games we’ve seen a few glimpses of here and there, but none of its appearances have ever been substantial. Even so, the concept of a free-to-play arcade-style racer that is supported through microtransactions and allows you to use your Xbox Avatar always seemed like a good one. This Xbox LIVE Arcade game was originally set for a 2009 release until it was decided a delay would be worth pursuing....

Why Dynasty Warriors is the greatest videogame series ever

Any sane, reasonable, intelligent human being already knows by now that Koei’sDynasty Warriorsseries is the greatest collection of videogames to haveeverstalked the Earth. Featuring a unique blend of unrelenting hardcore gaming action and fiendishly cerebral tactical challenges, it has been said by many thatDynasty Warriorsis humanity’s greatest cultural achievement since Dio’sHoly Diver. As with most excellent and venerable institutions, however, the series is not without its detractors. Their numbers may be small and their grasp of basic hygiene may be non-existent, but the ignorant, borderlineretardeddribbling from those that somehow thinkDynasty Warriorsisn’t very good cannot be ignored much longer....

Win the sheepy comment game, win this Flock! collectible

Capcom just sent me thisFlock!box in the mail. What’sinsidethe box? What secrets does it hold? I do not know. Perhaps no one knows. No one except for whomever designed the outside of the box and put the words “COLLECTOR’s ART PIECE, NOT A TOY” on the outside, anyway. Pretty much clueless on what to do with this little piece of swag, I asked Niero what we should do to give it away....

Xbox Original version of Fable on sale

Microsoft’s latest Deal of the Week takes some of the sting off the ridiculous price for an Xbox Original title download. For a limited time, you may purchase Lionhead’s RPGFablefor 800 Microsoft Points. If you walked into “next-gen” and boughtFable IIwithout experiencing the first, I highly suggest you give it a spin. It may be flawed and ancient by Internet standards, but it’s still a fun RPG that focuses on the important things: interaction, practical combat, andsexstory....

18 new Grand Theft Auto IV screens

Not much to say about these latest screenshots Rockstar sent over. There’s some new areas shown and we see some new characters. That’s about it. I find it odd that Rockstar would send these over so soon after thenew trailer. I’m too used to Rockstar showing something epic and then not saying a damn thing for the couple of months. Hopefully they keep this up and reveal as much as they can until the release....

3DS said to be graphically close to PS3, Xbox 360

Man, wouldn’t that be nice? A portable game system with near-HD visuals? We’ll have to wait until next week to see the real thing, but the rumor is that Nintendo’s upcoming portable will have processing power that even exceeds Nintendo’s most powerful console. In IGN’sEverything We Know About the 3DSround-up they say: Several developers that have experienced 3DS in its current form have reported, off the record, that it has processing capabilities that far exceed the Nintendo Wii and bring the device with abilities that are close to HD consoles such as PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360....

Amazon loves me, you’ll probably hate me

DearAmazon.com, wanna make out? After the debacle that wasAmazon’s $100 Xbox 360 Core System sale, I feltEXTREMELYfortunate to be one of the people who picked one up. With literally millions trying for only 1,000 consoles, I totally lucked out, and had to giggle to myself when considering the fact that I already had a 360, and was buying the new one as a gift. Well, it looks like the magical Amazon fairies have smiled upon me once again....

And The Gamers Who Play Them: Turn-based nerds, in three generations

[Editor’s note: Brilliam here takes a look at three different aspects of turn-based strategy games as part of this month’sMonthly Musingstopic. — CTZ] If there’s one genre that I’m not only familiar with, but whosegamer baseI am intimately familiar with, it’s the oft-maligned turn-based strategy. While the genre has evolved fairly steadily since its inception, I find that the user base is split into three major demographics: the old guard of history wonks and simulation junkies (let’s call them simulationists); a second, younger generation whose obsession is digging through abstract rules systems and breaking them (we’ll call them gamists); and a third, newer generation, whose interest in the tactical aspect of the game is secondary to other parts of the game such as narrative (the narrativists)....

Art Attack Friday: Dapper Dan

Fortunately for everyone, this week AAF’s artist Dapper Dan (aka *TraditionalDanimatio) has sensed my wishes and has created pinpoint illustrations of my rather vibrant dreams in his absolutely fantastic works250 RupeesandPipe Dreams. Dapper’s impressive talent to create game-related art doesn’t end there however, as his portfolio is loaded with homages toPunch Out(in a series comic of three),Castlevania, and even aportraitof theAngry Video Game Nerdhimself. The series of unbelievable Facebook graffiti drawings are worth taking a gander at, as well as the down-right impressive characterizations ofThe Big Lebowski characters....
