Microsoft has announced that its launching its “Xbox Live Labs” program, “as part of [their] ongoing commitment to improve Xbox Live.” What is it, exactly? Well, we’re not exactly sure, but Microsoft plans on performing a number of network tests between Xbox Live and your console.

“These results are recorded solely for the purpose of testing and improving the service,” writes Xbox Live’s Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb on his blog.

Participation in “Labs” is totally optional, and will run from March 10 through March 27. Here’s the catch: if you participate, your Xbox Live connectivity will be completely gimped. That means you won’t be able to game, watch movies, or download music while running “Labs.” Also, “your Internet connectivity may be slower than usual.”

So why would anyone want to do this again? To make Xbox Live better, of course! Oh, each success test will get you a “cool Avatar item” and a zero point Achievement as a “thank you.”
