Despite Nintendo pimping the3DSand Sony gearing up to launch thePlayStation Vita, Korean tech company LG has declared the age of pure gaming handhelds over. Well, Nintendo and Sony better pack up and go home now.

“The era of dedicated handheld gaming platform is over,” said CEO Dr. Jong-seok Park. “Today’s smartphones have the horsepower to compete with the best portable gaming devices and LG Optimus 3D is our proof.”

The above quote is an edited version of what Park originally said, which the company quietly removed from its updated press release. He originally added that, “We think 3D is the natural next step in portable entertainment and LG is eager to throw its hat in the ring with the Optimus 3D and Gameloft’s ‘must-be-seen-to-be-believed’ titles.”

What do you reckon? Have smartphones already eclipsed the likes of the 3DS and Vita, or is there still room for “proper” handheld gaming devices?
