When it comes to videogames, John Carmack is kind of a big deal. Lead programmer of games likeDoomandQuake, he’s unarguably one of the folks that put first-person shooters on the map.

So it seems fitting that Carmack will be receiving a Lifetime Achivement award at the 2010 Game Developer Choice Awards. The ceremony will take place during the Game Developer Conference in San Francisco on Thursday, March 11, and will be hosted by game designer Warren Spector.

Previous winners include Shigeru Miyamoto, Sid Meier, and Will Wright. Wright himself will present the award to Carmack, whose contributions have helped push gaming tech forward for more than twenty years.

My earliest memories of Carmack’s work include the Commander Keen titles, but it wasn’t until I playedWolfenstein 3Dthat id Software (and Carmack’s name) would forever to etched into my mind. I think I’m going to go playDoomnow.
