Amazon is opening up its publishing platform starting this afternoon with the newly-announced Kindle Development Kit. According to the official word, potential publishers will be able to build “active content” and put it on the Kindle — and yes, this includesgames.

One of the examples of publishers in the press release is Sonic Boom, who are “building word games and puzzles” using the KDK. EA Mobile is also signed up to do some work with it.

We’re not sure if we’ll be playing something as hip asR-Typeon electronic paper in the near future, or if a digital books device that doesn’t have backlighting turns out to be the brightest device to put a game on, but we’ll keep our eyes on KDK and its developers. Until then, keep reading. Because that’s what the Kindle is meant to be about.
