Hollie Bennett and I just got some time in withLegend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. After seeing Miyamoto basically face-plant in his attempts to get the game’s controls to work at the Nintendo press conference, I was sort of scared the game’s controls would be broken. Thankfully, that was not the case. The game controlled perfectly. I absolutely adore playing it.

That said, I hear Hollie’s complaints about the forced motion control. From what I played, there is no reason why Nintendo couldn’t give us the option to play the game with the Wii Classic Controller. The sword’s motion controls could be mapped to the right analog stick, and everything else could be covered by the D-pad and various buttons.

Is there any chance that Nintendo will go for that idea? If their adamant refusal to give players the option to playPhantom Hourglass,Spirit Tracks, andTwilight Princess(on the Wii) with traditional controls is any indication, then the answer is “no.”

There is never anything wrong with giving your players options, Nintendo.Skyward Swordis bound to sell in the millions, but I wager it would sell at least a million more if you made some concessions to your motion-control-hating ex-fans.
