Monthly Musings: For those about to die, we salute you

With every new month comes a new Monthly Musings topic, and another opportunity foryou— the average Destructoid reader — to get your thoughts featured on the front page. For better or worse — worse, probably — roughly 99% of videogames force the player to kill or destroy or otherwise defeat enemies to progress. Throughout all that time and all those quadrillions of deaths, gamers must havesomethingto show for it. We must have favorite enemies to fight, or fantastic stories of entire armies felled by our hands....

More from TGS: 360 HD-DVD demo

Yet another Xbox 360 video from the Tokyo Game Show, only this time one showing how their HD-DVD add-on will work. The interface looks pretty slick and considering it will be released somewhere around $200 or less in the U.S., I wouldn’t mind having this thing make its way into the living room.

Mortal Kombat recaptures the spirit of its origins

I was twelve years old whenMortal Kombatfirst appeared in arcades. At that age, my parents probably were not being over-protective in forbidding me to cross the busy intersection which bordered our suburban housing development. Once the pizza parlor on the far side acquired one of these bloody, fighting machines, the consequences of breaking this rule seemed insignificant. The compulsion to play became so great that any punishment would be preferable to denying myself its pleasures....

MS: New Xbox Experience the ‘biggest moment in the history of the Internet’

You can forget the birth of the World Wide Web or the creation of the .com. You might as well throw the rise of the blogs or the invention of Youtube in the trash can.According toMicrosoft’s Aaron Greenberg, being able to buy a pair of sunglasses for a bobble-headed cartoon character trumpsallthose Internet hallmarks. The Xbox Live product management director has suggested that the launch of the New Xbox Experience could be the biggest moment in Internet history....

Need for Speed 2007 teaser; guess what stitches on a phallic metaphor mean …

Yeah, I have no idea either. Then again, trying to decipher the subtext in an EA video game is akin to debating postmodern minimalist architecture after reading the back of a copy ofMaximmagazine. The teaser looks quite nice, though, I have to give them that. From the split second cuts of cars in motion, the graphics look to be top notch, but assuming they’re anything other than cinematics would be akin to assuming you could discuss postmodern minimalist architecture after reading some post on the Internet comparing the relative cultural values of such andMaximmagazine....

New PS Vita game announced: Escape Plan

We only got a quick look at the newly announced PS Vita gameEscape Plan, but it looks fantastic. The game also looks to be a ball-busting platformer. It stars what looks to be a big, shiny, fat bag of ink with a head named Laarg, as well as his little, thinner friend, Lil. They both have one simple goal: to escape by any means possible. Too bad there’s obstacles everywhere. The trailer at gamescom showed that if they fall, trip, touch something sharp or come in contact with sparks they splatter black ink everywhere....

New screens of Jill Valentine and Shuma-Gorath in MvC3

Capcom has released a bevy of new screens forMarvel vs. Capcom 3focused on the lovely Jill Valentine and that creature from beyond the stars, Shuma-Gorath. Now, I’ve never been much of a fighting game player and I gravitated towards Shuma-Gorath simply because of his appearance. I kept using him because by the time I was done looking at him, I had a pretty good idea how he played. He looks really shiny here....

NYCC: New Capcom Arcade Classics coming to Wii in 2011

There’s new Capcom Arcade Classics coming our way, which is always good news in my book. I have and treasure some of the Japan-only, multi-disc Sega Saturn Capcom classics set (they also released these for the PlayStation), but these new classics releases are even handier as they’ll be Wii Virtual Arcade games. This means I can use a wireless controller and see them in a less blurry fashion. A small sign on the New York Comic-Con show floor says that these classics are coming in 2011:...
