Scraps: One door opens, 500 stay locked forever (10/1/08)

This post is probably going to seem pretty stupid to you (excluding the news links at the end, which are AWESOME… sorta). You’ve been warned. Something occurred to me today while I was fiddling around withSilent Hill: Homecoming. There are a lot of locked doors in videogames. Doors that are locked for absolutely no good reason other than it would require more resources to create something beyond that door. And the doors have to be there because hallways need doors or they don’t look like hallways....

Sega Rally fan turns his Celica into game car

For one fan, it’sGAME OVER, YEAHfor his normal Toyota 1995 Celica. ThisAtariAgeforum membe must really like Sega Rally, as he went out of his way to match his car to the in-game Celica ST205 GT-Four from the classic video gameSega Rally Championship. I’ll be honest. I actually considered buying a Celica solely based on my love for Sega’s racer. I didn’t, but the car still always reminds me of the game....

SEGA says they’ll trade exclusivity for Shenmue funding

Yesterday I mentioned thatI would killfor a newBattletoadsgame, which I would, but it leaves me in a bit of a pickle as I’m not sure how to explain how badly I want a thirdShenmuegame. Saying I would cause a nuclear holocaust seems like a bit of an understatement as well, and I’m not sure how I can go beyond that. The point being is that I want it bad. The trilogy has to finish, and I don’t care how poorly it sells....

Sexism alive and well in Chinese gaming

Perfect World, an MMO developer based in Beijing, seems to think that the year is 1950. Their Chinese fantasy MMORPGWorld 2isset to opena female-only server group in the near future that, as the title implies, will only allow for female players. While this will definitely cut down on the amount of e-necking that occurs in-game, these poor ladies will never get dates to the sockhop if they are segregated this way....

Sierra portal pulled after Activision lawyer dogs attack

Obviously,Sarien.net— the online portal that let you play Sierra On-Line classics for free in your browser — couldn’t stand forever. IP owner Activision simply wasn’t going to stand for it, and it was just a matter of time before the legal dogs came barking at the door. Sarien.net is no more. “While we appreciate your dedication to the Sierra classic library and understand that you are a fan of these games, Activision has not authorized the development or distribution of these games via your Website....

So, this is what Epic Mickey looks like

Game Informerhas the exclusive onEpic Mickey, andGame Informeris carrying that exclusive around like a cat with a freshly killed rat. In preparation for its big magazine unveiling,GIhas today posted some imagery and artwork to wet the whistle, including an image of the redesigned Mickey Mouse. As you can see, he’s got a distinct retro look to him, but updated with a modern sheen. He certainly looks better than the weird man-ape character that Mickey has been immortalized as....

Soaring through the skies in H.A.W.X 2 and in real life

Guys. I got to fly a plane IN REAL LIFE! No, I’m not smoking and listening to Pink Floyd records! Ubisoft held aTom Clancy’sH.A.W.X 2event at a airport in Livermore California where we got to check out the game. We also spoke with the game’s narrative director, Edward Douglas, about what’s new in the sequel, his real-world flight experiences, and how Renelly “Psyche” Morel of theFrag Dollskicked my ass. You see, members of the press were also treated to 30 minutes of real flight experience in a Ci Marchetti Italian fighter plane, equipped with trick guns and smoke to simulate an actual dog fight experience....

Sony ‘considered’ second PSPgo analog nub

When the PSPgo was first revealed, one of the first complaints people had was the lack of a second analog nub. The single nub had been a bugbear for many PSP gamers over the years, and some had hopes that a complete reinvention would lead to a superior control scheme. Sony hadactually considered this, but decided it didn’t want to introduce new controls so late in the system’s lifecycle. “We also felt — like many users — that we wish we had a second analogue on the PSP,” explains Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida....

Square says videogame storytelling can be better than film

Square Enix, the once-proud home of many classic videogame tales, believes that videogames cansurpass film and theateras the most effective means of storytelling. The opinion comes courtesy ofStar Ocean: The Last HopeproducerYoshinori Yamagishi, and I’ll resist the urge to laugh at the idea of effective storytelling coming from somebody involved with a tri-Ace game. “As opposed to films, books and TV, as a medium it is more of a challenge to produce a game to tell a story,” he explains....

Star Wars: The Old Republic will cost money, confirmed

Here’s some tasty Game Developer Conference 2009 leftovers. According to BioWare co-executive producer Dr. Greg Zeschuk, the price for upcoming MMOStar Wars: The Old Republicwill probably be based on the market at the time it’s released. “The way we look at these things is, ‘What’s the standard at the time?’ Obviously we’re not quite done yet,” Zeschuk toldVG247. “We’ve got a lot of work left to do.
